Snoring is just as much of a problem if not more so for the people who have to sleep with a snorer. In severe cases, it is important to keep an eye on sleep patterns because of potential life threatening problems. Sleep apnea is a very serious problem because it causes a person to actually stop breathing during the night.  Don’t despair, you can find relief from snoring.

Treatments

There are many different treatments that are available on the market to help people with there snoring.  Snoring is caused by different things such as blocked nasal passages, deviated septum, the base of the tongue falling back into the throat, or enlarged tonsils or uvula. When you hear someone snore, you are hearing the vibration of their palate and throat tissues.

Certain lifestyle changes can help many people with their snoring problems. Smoking and alcohol are known to cause snoring.  One way to reduce it is by not overeating just before bedtime, not eating dairy products within a few hours of going to bed, exercising more often, and reducing the intake of caffeine.

Sometimes snoring can be controlled simply by sleeping with the mouth closed and by sleeping on the side instead of on the back. Many devices can be used to help people do these things. A chin strap is a device that is used to help keep a snorer’s mouth shut while they sleep until it becomes a habit. Certain kinds of mattresses and pillows are available to help a person train himself to sleep on his side rather than on his back; they make back sleeping uncomfortable.  There are also other ways to treat snoring.

Throat sprays can be used to lubricate the throat which makes it easier to breathe. Allergy medicine can also be used because it reduces swelling in the nasal passages.

There are several different reasons for snoring and just as many options to help a person stop snoring.  It’s well worth the effort to try.
